Urgent DDP: 70x40HQ Plastic Granules to Singapore

Large-scale exports of raw materials like plastic granules often face schedule bottlenecks at major ports.

This case study details how GWT Shipping assisted a Xiamen-based manufacturer with a massive 70-container project.

By strategically shifting the departure port from Xiamen to Quanzhou, we overcame a critical schedule gap that the client’s original logistics provider could not resolve.

Project Snapshot

  • Route: Quanzhou ➔ Singapore

  • Cargo: Plastic Granules

  • Container: 70 x 40HQ (Batch 1: 10 Urgent)

  • Service Type: Door-to-Door (DDP)

  • Key Factors: Port Switching Strategy, Urgent Deadline, High Volume Coordination.

Background & Challenges

In December 2023, a plastic products company in Xiamen needed to export a total of 70 containers to Singapore.

The project had a critical constraint: the first batch of 10 containers was extremely urgent.

Although the client had their own established logistics platform, their existing provider could not find a vessel schedule in Xiamen that met the deadline.

After reviewing the shipment, we identified three main operational requirements:

  • Schedule Gap: There were no suitable sailing schedules available from Xiamen Port to meet the urgent delivery date.

  • Trust Barrier: As this was the first collaboration, and the client had no experience shipping via Quanzhou, there was initial friction regarding the operational process and pre-declaration requirements.

  • Volume Pressure: The solution for the first 10 urgent containers needed to be robust enough to handle the remaining 60 containers.

GWT Shipping's Solution & Actions

To ensure the urgent batch arrived on time and to build trust for the full project, our team implemented the following steps:

1. Strategic Port Switching (Quanzhou Solution)

While Xiamen lacked capacity, our data showed that Quanzhou Port, a short distance away, had a vessel schedule that perfectly matched the timeline. We proposed trucking the goods to Quanzhou for departure.

Result: This alternative route provided the speed necessary to meet the deadline that the original Xiamen route could not.

2. Bridging the Operational Gap

The client was initially skeptical about changing ports and the pre-declaration process. Our operations team maintained patient, professional communication to resolve conflicts regarding the workflow.

Action: We rapidly executed the entire chain: Booking, Stowage Planning, SI/VGM data upload, Customs Release, and Gate-In.

3. Scaling for Success

After the successful delivery of the first 10 containers, the client’s trust was secured. We applied the same efficient workflow to the remaining 60 containers.

Result: The remaining batches were shipped quickly and efficiently, completing the entire 70-container order.

GWT Expert Insight

Note on Port Flexibility: When major ports (like Xiamen or Shenzhen) face congestion or schedule gaps, nearby regional ports (like Quanzhou or Nansha) often offer viable alternatives.

Shifting the origin port by a short trucking distance can often save days of waiting time for ocean vessels. A flexible forwarder will always look for these “Plan B” routes.

Project Outcomes

Through meticulous planning and resource coordination, we delivered the following results:

  • Urgent Delivery: The first 10 priority containers boarded the vessel successfully and arrived in Singapore on time.

  • Volume Execution: Successfully managed the export of all 70 x 40HQ containers via the optimized route.

  • Long-Term Partnership: Transforming a relationship that started with doubt into a long-term strategic alliance.

By proposing the Quanzhou alternative when Xiamen failed, GWT Shipping proved that flexibility is key to meeting urgent deadlines.

The success of this DDP project established GWT as a problem-solver capable of handling high-volume industrial exports.

Client Review

We were stuck because our usual route through Xiamen wasn’t fast enough.

GWT suggested Quanzhou, which we hadn’t used before. Despite our initial doubts, they handled the customs and booking perfectly.

They saved the urgent batch, and we gave them the rest of the 60 containers.
