The Challenges
GWT Shipping accepted this “rescue mission” in January 2024, facing a perfect storm of logistical hurdles:
Carrier Rejection (Weight vs. Peak Season): Carriers dislike “small heavy containers” during peak season; they prefer volume cargo. Booking 30 units simultaneously when space was already overbooked was nearly impossible.
Factory Resistance: The timeline was so tight that the Chinese factory initially refused to ship, citing a lack of preparation time and a reluctance to rush before the holiday.
Trucking Shortage: Even if we convinced the factory, the pre-CNY period meant a severe shortage of container trucks. The factory could not source enough vehicles to move 30 containers in 48 hours.
Documentation Cutoffs: The vessel schedule required the SI (Shipping Instructions), VGM, and Customs Declaration to be filed immediately, leaving no margin for error.

Our team implemented an aggressive resource mobilization plan to force the shipment through.
Step 1: Multi-Channel “Saturation” Booking
Action: Understanding that a single carrier request would fail, GWT applied a “saturation” strategy. We simultaneously applied for space with MSK, OOCL, and Wan Hai.
Decision: By leveraging our volume contracts and relationships, we successfully secured the full allocation from OOCL, though the cutoff time was extremely tight.
Outcome: Space was secured, but the operational window was less than 3 days.
Step 2: Resource Mobilization (Trucking & Factory)
Action: The factory claimed they couldn’t ship due to a lack of trucks. GWT didn’t accept this excuse. We negotiated firmly with the factory to get their agreement to load, then mobilized our own emergency trucking fleet.
Execution: GWT supplemented the factory’s limited transport capacity with our own trucks, coordinating a massive synchronized loading operation to get all 30 containers to the port.
Step 3: Parallel Documentation & “Protected” Status
Action: To beat the clock, we processed documentation in parallel with physical loading.
Coordination: We pre-validated the SI and VGM data with the client and factory. As soon as containers were gated in, we uploaded the data and filed customs immediately.
Critical Step: We applied for “Protected Status” with OOCL to ensure that even if the vessel was overbooked, our 30 heavy containers would not be rolled.
